Our Next STEPS community-based intervention program steers the youth of our community away from the juvenile justice system disproportionately filled with youth of color and wrought with systemic problems in partnership with the NYC Department of Probation (DOP).
To create a lasting impact in the lives of youth, we connect at-risk youth, ages 16-24, with mentors and deliver a cognitive behavioral therapy-based curriculum designed to help young adults in the community stay out of jail over the course of nine months with a direct focus on at-risk youth who reside in or near NYCHA housing developments throughout NYC.
HOW IT WORKS
The core components of the Next STEPS model includes:
A group process that encourages participants to become a major support system for each other.
A curriculum based on cognitive behavioral principles delivered by culturally appropriate mentors or “credible messengers.”
Case management and mentors who provide support, advice, and guidance.
The integration of positive youth development values, principles, and practices.
Encouragement to pursue educational, employment, and community engagement opportunities.
