What's a CDFI?

The Harlem Entrepreneurial Fund, HCC's lending affiliate, is a Community Development Financial Institution — a lender certified by the U.S. Treasury to invest in places mainstream banks overlook. In plain terms: we put capital to work in Harlem, and unlike a one-time donation, that capital comes back and gets lent again and again.

The myth
The truth
Investing in low-income communities is charity — money out the door.
It's infrastructure — capital that builds an economy and earns its keep.
The people served couldn't qualify for a real loan.
90% of our borrowers were creditworthy; the system simply excluded them.
A donation helps once, then it's gone.
Repaid loans are recycled and lent again — and unlock matching federal capital.
